About Lake County, Oregon:
Beautiful Lake County, nicknamed the "Oregon Outback," is located in the south central high desert of Oregon. If you love nature and the wilderness, this is the county for you. Despite its arid climate, there are numerous opportunities for fishing, boating, and other water recreation. Large lakes within its borders include Lake Abert, Summer Lake, and Goose Lake. Enjoy the wildlife of the region with a visit to Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge to view and photograph big-horn sheep, pronghorn, sage grouse, predatory birds and migratory birds in their natural habitat. If forests are more of your forte, you can explore two different national forests.
For the natural history and geology lover, there are several areas of interest. One is the Lost Forest Research Natural Area, a protected relic forest. While you're there, don't forget to visit Fossil Lake as well, where many prehistoric fossils have been unearthed! You can also bring your ATV and have some fun at the Christmas Valley Sand Dunes afterwards. Venture to the Glass Buttes, an obsidian complex or visit Plush, where you can hunt for Oregon sunstones. Rock formations and other curiosities to explore include Crack in the Ground, a long fissure with ice in its floor year round. Check out Big Hole, Hole-in-the-Ground, and Fort Rock as well. One last quirky natural feature of the county is Hunter's Hot Springs with its perpetual geyser.
Besides ATV, fishing, and boating, other outdoor sports include skiing at Warner Canyon and hang gliding at various locations.
